Light filtering or room darkening, and when each earns its keep

Two words on a label decide how a room wakes up, and only one of them is common on our shelf. Here is the plain version, told straight about what we do and do not cut.

Filtering softens, darkening blocks

A light filtering weave lets daylight through while breaking up the view, so the room stays bright but private. Room darkening construction, usually a tighter weave or a backed slat, stops most of the light at the window. Neither is better. They solve different rooms.

Where this catalog actually sits

Worth saying plainly before you read further: we are a light filtering house. Every design here that carries a light line on its label says filtering, with a single exception, a printed valance labelled room darkening. Nothing we cut is sold as blackout and nothing here is lined. If the room you are dressing needs real dark, this guide will still tell you how to get it, but the shade doing the heavy work will not have our name on it.

Room by room, the choice mostly makes itself

Living rooms and kitchens live on daylight, and filtering keeps them from going gloomy while still covering the glass. Bedrooms split by owner: children asleep before sunset and anyone working nights want darkening, while early risers often prefer the gentle brightening a filtering panel allows.

• Kitchen: filtering, almost always. Sun on the counter is the point.
• Bath: filtering with a decent weave. Privacy without a cave.
• Bedroom, streetlight outside: darkening, or the lamp never really goes off.
• Nursery at nap time: darkening buys you the two oclock nap in July.

Darkening is not blackout, and the gap matters

Room darkening dims a room seriously without sealing it. Light still slips around the edges of any blind and through the gap above a curtain rod. If total dark is the goal, work in layers: a darkening shade inside the frame plus a wide panel in front covers both leaks at once.

You can hang both on one window

The classic pairing is a filtering layer for the day and a darkening layer for the night, on a double rod or a blind and curtain together. The window works shifts, and each layer only has to be good at its own one.
